The arrival of your baby will turn your life upside down and require real, often radical, changes in your daily routine. Taking care of a baby after birth is a delicate task, but it brings a lot of comfort to the mother and allows you to bond with your baby. Here are the different stages of this very special relationship.
Bath time and baby
Bath time is a special moment for your baby. Don’t forget that it’s their natural environment, where they floated for 9 months. So, it’s only natural that your baby will be happy and exchange little smiles with you when you put them in the water. The time of day doesn’t matter, but don’t do it when you’re in a hurry; above all, it’s a moment of relaxation where you should enjoy being together.
Caring for the umbilical cord
It’s essential to clean your baby’s umbilical cord daily, as your pediatrician explained. After this step, never place it under the diaper but leave it exposed to fresh air so it can dry. After about a week, it will fall off on its own. If there is redness or a little blood, the pediatrician will prescribe an antibiotic to prevent any infection.
Genital hygiene
For a baby girl, always start with the vulva before moving on to her bottom. To clean properly, gently separate the labia but clean only superficially to avoid removing her natural protection against bacteria. For a baby boy, wash the penis and scrotum with water and a mild soap. Dry thoroughly, especially in the folds.
Cleaning the nose
Babies can’t breathe through their mouths, so their noses must be clear for them to breathe. To prevent infections, you need to remove any impurities. Using saline solution, clean one nostril at a time, and use a new compress each time.
