Acne is not related to poor hygiene, but rather to a hormonal upheaval in the child. It is not treated like adolescent acne. Newborn acne does not require any treatment. It disappears before the age of one.
Causes of infant acne
Also called milia, infant acne forms pimples mainly on the child's face.
They are thought to be caused by the transmission of hormones secreted by the mother to the fetus during pregnancy. Once the baby is born, this high hormonal level acts on the body by stimulating the baby's sebaceous glands, which produce excess sebum.
Do not confuse acne with heat rash, which can be found all over the body, especially in the folds. Acne is different from hives, which are large red patches causing intense itching, or eczema, which are dry patches with streaks. Hives or eczema often appear as an allergic reaction, to the introduction of a new food, the use of a new cosmetic product, or the prescription of a medication.
Tips for eliminating acne marks?
Doctors recommend not applying anything to the child's skin. Oily creams could only worsen the situation by clogging the pores of the epidermis. It is essential not to touch, scratch, or worse, pop the baby's pimples, even if they are pus-filled. The infection could worsen and the newborn could be left with scars. Mittens can help prevent scratching.
After bathing, it is important to dry the child well by gently patting the pimples, to avoid irritation. If the baby tends to drool due to teething, always wipe their mouth to avoid increasing inflammation.
To clean the face, a cotton pad soaked in saline solution works perfectly for optimal tolerance. A little thermal water spray can soothe the skin. The use of talcum powder is not useful for newborn acne.
