How to Perform Intimate Hygiene at the Maternity Ward?
Before giving birth, women are often unsure about intimate hygiene practices to follow in the maternity ward. The intimate area may have undergone an episiotomy or a tear, due to the baby’s head passing or the use of instruments. Some may be tempted to skip this step for fear of pain.

A lack of hygiene, just like excessive hygiene, can cause irritation or even infection. It is important to perform intimate hygiene daily in the maternity ward, even in the case of an episiotomy.
Intimate hygiene during your daily shower
Ideally, intimate hygiene should be done in the shower for optimal rinsing. Choose a gentle cleansing product in gel or foam form.
New mothers often need a feeling of freshness. The product should soothe any irritation and respect the balance of the intimate mucous membranes. Choose a soap-free care product with a neutral and physiological pH, tested under gynecological supervision.
A product that is too harsh or washing too frequently (more than twice a day) destroys the vaginal flora, which acts as a barrier against yeast infections.
What to do in case of an episiotomy?
Episiotomy is common during childbirth. This technique is well managed, thanks to dissolvable stitches that disappear after 10 days. A daily wash without rubbing is sufficient.
In case of bleeding, do not hesitate to change regularly, wearing either cotton or disposable underwear. Also opt for loose-fitting clothes made from natural materials, such as harem pants or yoga pants.
After washing, make sure to dry the scar well by dabbing with a compress or a clean bath towel. The use of a hair dryer, once recommended, is no longer advised as it tends to dry out the intimate mucous membranes.
