A special bonding moment with your baby, bath time should always be done safely. While parents know never to leave a child alone on the changing table, the same safety applies in the bath.
A child must always be supervised. Even with a bath seat or ring, baby can slip and, depending on age, drowning can occur in less than 10 seconds. Moreover, bath time is essential for hygiene. With suitable care products, baby should be washed from the cleanest to the dirtiest areas to avoid spreading germs.
Properly prepare baby’s bath before washing
Gather all the necessary items before the bath to optimize safety. In the bathroom, set up a board or small table covered with a changing mat and a towel to soap or take baby out of the bath. Prepare the cleansing gel, a washcloth, a bath cape, a diaper, and a change of clothes in advance.
In the bath, immerse the child in water at 37°C. Check the temperature with a thermometer. Water that is too hot can cause a third-degree burn in just a few seconds.
Hold the child by the arm, with your forearm under their head. The bath does not need to last more than 15 minutes. Just a few minutes of immersion are enough to soothe and wash baby.
Hygiene rules for washing your child
Choose a gentle cleanser for the body. With a neutral pH, it should be alcohol-free, paraben-free, phenoxyethanol-free, fragrance-free, etc. If your child has dry skin, which is common in little ones, opt for a superfatted soap.
Start by cleaning the scalp, arms, chest, then legs. With the washcloth, finish with the diaper area. Wash this area from front to back to avoid spreading microbes to the urinary area.
After the bath, dry baby thoroughly by patting, paying special attention to the folds. Rubbing with the towel could cause irritation.
