What newborn care should be given at birth?

A few hours after birth, the baby receives their first bath, which is a real moment of well-being for the baby and bonding with the parents. This daily care requires multiple precautions: a suitable bathtub, water at 37°C, quality care products, and above all, constant supervision of the child.

Baby care is important for their delicate skin. Between bathing and changing, there are plenty of opportunities to keep your child’s hygiene at its best. In the days following birth, the navel is an area to watch closely to avoid any risk of infection.

The bath, baby’s first hygiene care
Baby’s bath is done in two steps. The parent should wash the baby, using a body and hair cleansing gel, starting with the cleanest areas (hair, torso, and limbs) and finishing with the dirtiest, such as the diaper area.

Next, the child is immersed in the water. You need to support their head with one arm and hold them at the shoulder. One hand remains free to rinse the child.

After the bath, it is essential to dry the child with a towel, patting and paying special attention to the folds. A moisturizing cream can be useful, as well as applying ointment to the diaper area before putting the diaper back on.

Face cleansing is done with saline solution and a cotton pad, focusing on the nostrils, eyes, and behind the ears.

Navel care
The baby’s umbilical cord is cut and tied at birth. A small piece of the cord remains attached to the navel for about a week. Even while it is present, the baby can still have a bath.

The only precaution is to apply a drying solution after the bath, which avoids the need for a compress. During the first three days, the navel may ooze and stick to the diaper. It is important to remove the diaper carefully.
